Bill Potts Obtains Bail For Biochemist Facing Drug Charges

A Griffith University PhD student with a degree in biochemistry has become a real life case of Breaking Bad, using his degree to allegedly manufacture illicit drugs.

In his day job, Jason Mackenzie teaches medical students at Griffith but the 42 year old yesterday faced Southport Court accused of being an integral part of an interstate Albanian drug syndicate.

The Robina-based student has been charged with trafficking and manufacturing dangerous drugs after a series of raids across the Gold Coast on Tuesday as part of Operation Kilo Chess.

Mr Mackensie’s lawyer Bill Potts said the charges were “only allegations” and did not involve his role at the university.

Mr Mackenzie was bailed to reappear July 2.

His co-accused, Sasha Petrovic, 49, was remanded in custody while Nicole Earthrowel, 37, was granted bail.

Mr Petrovic faces a raft of charges including trafficking, production, possession of dangerous drugs, along with possession of a weapon and an explosive device…
